netCDF is one of the more common file conversion approaches for converting files from the Vendor's native format to a standard format for sharing with external data processing programs. Eastman supported the early efforts in netCDF/Andi. It has always been very important for our users to be able to convert files from one vendor's format to another. Often one software package will have capabilities that another doesn't possess or someone might only have training in one software package and not another. We served on ASTM committees and also we required vendors to supply the format as part of instrument purchases.
These capabilites have been critical to our operations since those early days and they are still employed daily! Our early work was discussed briefly in one of the Andi Newsletters in 1995.
Many of the vendors include netCDF conversion incorporated into their program or a stand-alone application. The latter approach is utilized by Thermo DSQ GC-MS systems to netCDF format using Thermo's File Converter program.
The resulting netCDF files are then converted with Water's DataBridge program for processing with Water's MassLynx software package.
We previously used MassTransit, but it is no longer distributed as a commercial product. Instead, it is incorporated into Wiley's KnowItAll software for mass spectrometry processing of a variety of vendors native file formats.
MASSTransit was an important utility that helped bridge the gap between proprietary mass spectrometry data formats. For many years it allowed laboratories to convert, archive, and exchange data across multiple vendor platforms, making it easier to preserve legacy datasets and use third-party software for data analysis. Although newer software and standardized formats have become more common, MASSTransit's contribution to mass spectrometry data interoperability remains significant.
