NIST26 EI GC-MS: Basic Introductory Course

.
This is a basic introductory course in NIST26 V4.0 EI GC-MS.  This web page provides All FREE resources for teaching and learning gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). It is suitable for undergraduate and graduate laboratory courses and also serves as a self-study resource for new users of Agilent GC-MSD systems.

The 90 minute course demonstrates the power of electron ionization (EI) mass spectrometry for the identification of unknown compounds.  The NIST26 Search Software now includes an integrated version of AMDIS, eliminating the need to transfer data between separate programs and making the workflow much easier to teach and learn..

The course also demonstrates how chemical drawing software can be used to enter structures into the NIST Search program for structure searching and how NIST MS Interpreter helps correlate observed fragment ions with theoretical fragmentation pathways and isotope patterns.

FREE Resources Included

  • Instructional video tutorials with accompanying handouts
  • Fully functional NIST26 Search Software V4.0 demonstration version
  • EI GC-MS data files supplied with the NIST26 demonstration software
  • Additional EI GC-MS data files supplied with this course
  • NIST MS Interpreter for understanding EI fragmentation mechanisms
  • NIST demonstration library containing 2,373 EI reference spectra
  • Five additional free EI reference libraries containing 58,456 spectra and 34,939 chemical structures
  • ACD ChemSketch chemical drawing software (free for personal and academic use)
  • Mass Spec Calculator chemical drawing program (free with no limitations)

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Process a GC-MS data file.
  • Separate overlapping chromatographic peaks using automated deconvolution
  • Search unknown EI spectra against the NIST library
  • Evaluate library matches using spectral quality and fragmentation chemistry
  • Draw chemical structures and perform structure-based searches
  • Use NIST MS Interpreter to understand why fragment ions are formed
  • Identify unknown compounds with greater confidence
